Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo Wins European Sportperson of the Year
After claiming his fourth Ballon d’Or, Real Madrid and Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has picked up yet another award while making history.
The Portugal captain and Euro 2016 champion has been named European Sportperson of the Year after leading Madrid to their 11th UEFA Champions League title and second Club World Cup crown and bringing home Portugal’s first ever European Championship in July. The award is voted for by 27 Euro media agencies, looked at the social media interactions of top athletes from around the world, and Ronaldo leads the pack, according to social analytics. He becomes the first footballer to win the accolade, which was launched 59 years ago by Polska Agencja Prasowa (PAP).
Ronaldo finished ahead of tennis player Andy Murray and swimmer Katinka Hosszu.
