Once again, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will do their annual battle, and no I’m talking about tomorrow’s El Clasico. Barcelona’s Messi and Real Madrid’s Ronaldo will meet again in Zurich for the FIFA’s Best Men’s Player award where in the past five years, the two have finished either first or second. Messi has the advantage in that many years, edging out the Portuguese star three wins to two which included last year.

Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann, who finished the Euro 2016 as the top scorer is alongside the two on the three-man shortlist.

Ronaldo is the favorite to win the Ballon d’Or winner over five-time winner Lionel Messi who led Barca to the 2015-16 La Liga title. Ronaldo is looking to win the award for the fourth time as he has Real Madrid atop the La Liga table thanks to 10 league goals.

Ronaldo has shined in the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid and won the Euro 2016 with Portugal for the first time in the country’s history.

Now onto the ladies.

The shortlist for the women’s Ballon d’Or is Carli Lloyd (U.S.), Marta (Brazil) and Melanie Behringer (Germany).

Behringer led Germany to their first Women’s Olympic Football Tournament gold medal, while the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year Carli Lloyd scored 17 goals in 2016 for the USWNT. Five-time winner, Brazil’s Marta is in the final three for the 12th time in 13 years but only led her country to fourth place at the Olympics after losing to Canada in the Bronze medal game.

The FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala takes place in Zurich on Jan. 9. 2017
